My name is Theoneste (Theo) Mutabazi and I am a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying). I hold a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology degree from Yorkville University and a post-graduate certificate in Addictions Treatment and Prevention in addition to other academic credentials I obtained by pursuing various educational programs in different disciplines. Over the past five years, I have held various positions in different organisations that allowed me to apply my counselling knowledge and skills while providing services to different population groups from various cultural, social, and economic backgrounds. I have a passion for making a difference in people’s lives; especially those who are in grips of mental health and addiction problems, are living on the margins of society, and are homeless or have come into contact with the criminal justice system. I exhibit emphatic, non-judgmental, and respectful behaviours in all interactions with my clients, and demonstrate knowledge, skills and abilities needed to competently work with clients from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds, social and economic statuses, religious and spiritual believes, and sexual orientations. The principles that guide my work with clients include empathy, acceptance, compassion, positive regard, collaboration and partnership. I embraces humanistic, integrative, and wholistic approaches to counselling and psychotherapy. To enhance and promote the growth, well-being, and mental health of individuals, couples, families, and groups, I actively engages these clients in all steps of the counselling process from establishing and maintaining a therapeutic relationship through assessment, intervention, and evaluation of outcomes to termination of the therapeutic relationship. I use various theoretical orientations, therapeutic modalities or techniques (e.g., Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), and Motivational Interviewing (MI)) to attend to various problems clients present with. I considers not only the internal world of a client (affective, cognitive, behavioural, physiological and the transpersonal dimensions of the individual) but also the impact of external world (social, cultural, and political factors) on the client’s mental health condition and experience. I value professional growth and development and I am enrolled in several therapeutic modality trainings and certification courses including but not limited to Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) for PTSD, Anxiety, Depression & Personality Disorders; Advanced CBT training, Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy (EFIT), Dual Certified Child and Family Trauma Professional, The Complete Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy Competency Course, The Gottman Method Approach to Transforming Relationships, ADHD Certification course; Binge Eating & Chronic Dieting Certification course; Advanced Grief Counselling Certification Training; Anxiety, Depression & Mood Disorder Certification Course, Trauma Treatment Certification Training, and DBT Certification Training.
